THE GLOBAL AFRICAN PRESENCE:
A NEW COURSE BY RUNOKO
RASHIDI
1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Global African Presence, a new on-line course by
Runoko Rashidi, focuses on Africans around the world
both ancient and modern. It examines the African
origins and evolution of humanity, the African
presence in classical civilizations, and the present
locations and conditions of African people. In this
course we will be using the words African and Black
interchangeably, as synonyms. This includes Africans
as the first modern humans, the subsequent migrations
and movements of African people out of Africa and the
later involuntary scattering of African people around
the world as the result of enslavement.
2. SYLLABUS
WEEK 1
THE AFRICAN ORIGINS OF HUMANITY AND CIVILIZATION
Our first class begins with a look at the African
Origins of Humanity and Human Culture. And then we
trace the evolution of classical civilization in
Africa, beginning in Central Africa, and examine Nile
Valley Civilization, highlighting KMT (Ancient
Egypt)--the world's greatest ancient nation.
WEEK 2
CLASSICAL AFRICAN CIVILIZATIONS AND THE BEGINNING OF
THE DISPERSAL
We look briefly at other African civilizations
including Carthage, Axum, and the great West African
civilizations. Then we plant the seeds for the
beginnings of our global African travel excursion.
WEEK 3
THE AFRICAN PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND SOUTH ASIA
In week three of our course we look at the African
presence in such places as the Arabian Peninsula,
Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Turkey,
Pakistan and India--including an examination of the
Dalits--India' s Black Untouchables.
WEEK 4
AFRICANS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, EAST ASIA, AUSTRALIA AND
THE PACIFIC ISLANDS
Here we cover a vast area that includes the peopling
and civilizations of the Philippines, Cambodia,
Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and China. Then we journey
into the Dreamtime with the Aboriginal Australians and
sail the islands of the Pacific in search of the
African presence.
WEEK 5
THE AFRICAN PRESENCE IN EUROPE
In this class we look at African people as the first
people of Europe before we deal with African presence
in Greek mythology, African popes and caesars and
martyrs, Black Madonnas and African Saints, the mighty
Moors, and great African intellectuals.
WEEK 6
THE AFRICAN PRESENCE IN THE AMERICAS AND AN OVERVIEW
In our final class we look at the African peopling of
the Americas, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and
African resistance. We look at Africans throughout
the Americas today and have a final summation of what
we have covered.
The textual basis of each class will be Dr. Rashidi's
award winning Global African Presence Web Site.
Supplemental texts are the Ivan Van Sertima Journal of
African Civilizations anthologies.
