On the 23rd August 1791, over 200 years ago, a brave group of Afrikans on the island of San Domingo rose up and fought against the heinous crime of enslavement. This was the richest and cruellest colony in the Western Hemisphere. More than one third of Afrikans died within a few years of being taken there. They took on the then Super Powers of France, England and Spain. They were led by Toussaint L’Ouverture. In January 1804 the first Black state out of Afrika was created called Haiti. Twenty years later France, who had lost their most precious possession and colony, demanded ‘150million francs’ in Reparation, plus decreed that French ships and commercial goods entering and leaving Haiti would be discounted at 50 percent, in exchange for Haiti’s liberty. The demands were non-negotiable and delivered by 12 warships armed with 500 canons; Haiti was forced to pay; the payment chained the Black nation to perpetual poverty. It did not finish paying its indemnity debt until 1947.

The conference is aimed at educating union members and in particular those in the Afrikan communities, their supporters and the wider Trade Union movement on aspects of history with insight into other aspects of Reparations.
We also welcome the participation and support of Community Groups and Organisation.
